Were the common man happy before british ruled

Before Britishers common man was living in peace ,we cannot say they were more happy but yes many things were seen around that makes peace possible.The unity among Hindus and Muslims,the respect for each other's faith,the development during Mughal rule all were indications of betterment unlike during the British rule when there was plunder,drain of resources,oppression,etc.
