Dear Student,
Before the arrival of British in India, most of Indian population lived in villages, and India was agricultural economy . At that time the land belonged to peasants collectively, zamindars were only revenue farmer.
India enjoyed trade with both within the country and outside the country. Balance of imports and exports was maintained. India imported coffee, gold, dry fruits etc. and exported cotton, silk, indigo, sugar etc. India was whole sufficient in handicrafts and agricultural products. Towards the end of 18th century, India was one of the main centres of world trade.
India had highest GDP share in world's economy.
However, with arrival of British Indian Handicraft industry has suffered a lot.
