Question

What affects enzyme action?

Open in App
Solution

Enzymes are proteins capable of speeding up a chemical reaction occurring inside our bodies. It usually requires an optimum temperature & pH for its action. Amylase, trypsin, and lipase are some examples of enzymes.

Factors:

  1. The temperature or the pH at which the compound shows its maximum activity is called the optimum temperature or optimum pH, respectively. As mentioned earlier, the enzymes are protein compounds. A temperature or pH more than optimum may alter the molecular structure of enzymes. Generally, an optimum pH for enzymes is considered to be ranging b/w 5 & 7.
  2. The concentration of the Substrate: The velocity of reaction increase with the increase in the concentration of the substrate initially. It reaches its peak value (Vmax) and there is generally no further increase after that point. At this, all active sites of the enzyme then get saturated with substrate and there are no sites left for binding with the substrate.
