  1. Fungi are eukaryotic organisms that include microorganisms such as yeasts, molds, and mushrooms.
  2. These organisms are classified under kingdom fungi.
  3. Following are the important facts about fungi:
  1. The fungal part is called a mycobiont and the non-fungal part is called a photobiont which contains chlorophyll.
  2. Many lichen partners also include one photobiont & one mycobiont that is not universal & there are lichens with more than one photobiont partner.
  3. They grow on the dead and decaying matter like dung and old rotten logs which are rich in organic matter.
  4. Therefore, they are saprophytic fungi.
  5. Penicillin, an important antibiotic is obtained from a fungus called Penicillium notatum.
