Question

What are (a) the lowest frequency, (b) the second lowest frequency, and (c) the third lowest frequency for standing waves on a wire that is 10.0m long has a mass of 100g, and is stretched under a tension of 250N?

Solution

Mass per unit length of the wire μ=ML=0.110=0.01 kg/m
Tension T=250 N
Velocity of standing waves v=Tμ=2500.01=158 m/s
(a) : Lowest frequency νo=v2L=1582×10=7.9 Hz
(b) : Second lowest frequency ν2=2νo=2×7.9=15.8 Hz
(c) : Third lowest frequency ν3=3νo=3×7.9=23.7 Hz
