Solution
The respiration refers to catabolic process of breakdown of reduced substrates. This process can occur in presence of oxygen (aerobic respiration) or absence of oxygen (anaerobic respiration). The process of aerobic respiration completely breaks down glucose into carbon dioxide and water, whereas anaerobic respiration incompletely breaks down glucose into alcohol (alcohol fermentation) or lactic acid (lactic acid fermentation).
