Question

What are α and β parameters for a transistor? Obtain a relation between them.

Open in App
Solution

Alpha=αdc:It is defined as the ratio of collector current to emitter current.
αdc=IcIE ......(1)
Beta=βdc:It is the current gain defined as the ratio of collector current to base current.
βdc=IcIB ......(2)
Relation between αdc and βdc:
For a transistor,
IB=IC+IE ........(3) with ICIE
Dividing both sides of eqn(3) by Ic we get
IEIC=IBIC+1
1αdc=1βdc+1
αdc=βdcβdc+1 ........(4)
or βdc=αdc1αdc .........(5)
Equations (4) and (5) give the relation between αdc and βdc of a transistor.
