Question

What are apomixis and amphimixis?

Open in App
Solution

Apomixis:

  1. Apomixis is asexual reproduction, which occurs without fertilization.
  2. Because asexual reproduction does not include gamete fusion, no meiosis takes place.
  3. Apomixis occurs when mature egg cells created during mitosis grow into embryos without being fertilized first.
  4. These embryos will be genetically identical to their maternal parents.
  5. Apomictic parthenogenesis, which is totally cloned of their maternal parent, is an example of apomixis.

Amphimixis:

  1. Amphimixis is a type of sexual reproduction in which the male and female parents' gametes, i.e. the ovum and spermatozoa, fuse during fertilization, resulting in the creation of zygotes.
  2. The zygote will then result in the formation of offspring that are genetically unique from their parents.
  3. It also involves the division of meiosis.
