The basal plate is the region of the neural tube ventral to the sulcus limitans in the developing nervous system.
It is made up primarily of motor neurons and extends from the rostral mesencephalon to the end of the spinal cord.
Alar plate:
The alar plate (or alar lamina) is a neural structure in the embryonic nervous system that communicates general somatic and general visceral sensory impulses.
It is located on the dorsal side of the neural tube.
The caudal part of the spinal cord eventually becomes sensory axons. The alar plate, in particular, becomes the dorsal grey of the spinal cord later on.
