Importance of Algae:

Food source:

  1. Many species of marine algae, such as Laminaria, Sargassum, and Porphyra, are edible, and Spirulina and Chlorella are high in protein.
  2. As a result, they're employed as dietary supplements.
  3. Furthermore, they are grown for animal feed.

Commercial importance:

  1. Agar, which is derived from Gelidium and Gracilaria, is used in the making of ice cream and jellies and has a commercial value.
  2. Carrageenin, a type of emulsifier derived from red algae, is used in paints, chocolate, and toothpaste.

Medicine:

Red algae, such as Corallina, are used in medicine to treat worm infections.
