Question

What are chlorofluorocarbons, why they became popular as substitute of ammonia as refrigerant?

Open in App
Solution

Chlofluorocarbons (CFCs) are organic compounds containing carbon, chlorine and fluorine. They are used as refrigerants. Chlorofluorocarbons such as dichlorodifluorocarbon (also known as CFC-12) have the same boiling point as ammonia, but they are non-toxic. Since pure ammonia is highly toxic, CFCs have replaced ammonia as the refrigerant in many general applications.
