Open in App
Solution

  • Claisen-Schmidt condensation
The reaction between an aldehyde or ketone having an alpha-hydrogen with an aromatic carbonyl compound lacking alpha hydrogen is called the Claisen–Schmidt condensation.
Ex- Synthesis of dibenzylideneacetone-
2C6H5CHO+CH3COCH3NaOH/EtOH−−−−−−−C6H5CH=CHCOCH=CHC6H5(Dibenzylideneacetone)
  • Kolbe's reaction
The Kolbe's reaction is a carboxylation chemical reaction that proceeds by heating sodium phenoxide with carbon dioxide under pressure (100atm,125), then treating the product with an acid.
Ex- Reaction of phenol with NaOH and CO2 to form salicylic acid-
C6H5OHNaOH−−−C6H5ONa(i)CO2−−−(ii)H+C6H5(COOH)OH2-Hydroxybenzoic acid(Salicylic acid)
