A decimal number is one in which the whole number and fractional parts are separated by a decimal point. In a decimal number, a decimal point is a dot. A value less than one is represented by the digits after the decimal point. Decimals are numbers that fall between integers on a number line. They're just another way of writing fractions. Decimals can be used to write more precise quantities for items such as length, weight, distance, and money.

Consider an example.

13.27 is a decimal number.

Here,

13 is a whole number part.

27 is a decimal part or fractional part and represents the fractional part.
