Open in App
Solution

Respiratory substrate

Respiratory substrate is defined as any organic molecule found in living cells which releases energy when it is broken down. The most common respiratory substrate in the body is glucose, which release 38 molecules of ATP when broken down.

There are different respiratory substrate such as:

  • Carbohydrates
  • Lipids
  • Proteins

The most energy yielding respiratory substrate is lipid, however, the most preferred form of respiratory substrate is carbohydrate as the oxidation of carbohydrate is much easier compared to other respiratory substrates.
