Question

What are dipole-induced dipole forces?

Open in App
Solution

Dipole-induced dipole forces

  • This type of attractive force operates between the polar molecules having permanent dipole and the molecules lacking permanent dipole.
  • The polar molecule's permanent dipole creates a dipole on the electrically neutral molecule by deforming its electronic cloud. As a result, the other molecule develops an induced dipole.
  • The induced dipole moment depends on the dipole moment of the permanent dipole and the polarisability of the electrically neutral molecule.

The diagram showing the Dipole-induced dipole interaction between a permanent dipole and an induced dipole is given below:-
