Endemic disease

  1. On the basis of extent, diseases are classified as endemic, sporadic, pandemic, and epidemic.
  2. Endemic disease is confined to a specific area and affects only a few people.
  3. Sporadic disease occurs infrequently and irregularly with randomly scattered instances without any known cause.
  4. A sudden increase in the number of cases of a disease in a population of an area beyond the expected normal level is called an epidemic disease.
  5. An epidemic disease that spreads to several countries is called a pandemic disease.

Examples of endemic diseases are:

  1. Goiter in India
  2. Rift valley fever in east Africa.
