Question

What are enzymes? Enumerate the properties of enzymes.

Open in App
Solution

Enzymes are the molecules which help in increasing te rate of the reaction. These molecules do not participate in the reaction but catalyze the reaction. The enzymes help in the breakdown of large molecules into smaller molecules or bring together two smaller molecules to form a larger molecule.
Properties of enzymes :
(1) Enzymes affect the rate of biochemical reaction. There is no effect of the enzymes in maintenance of the direction of the reaction.
(6) All the enzymes are specific in action. They act on a single substrate or on a group of substrates.
(7) Enzymatic activity decreases with increase in temperature. Most of the enzymes show maximum activity at an optimum of 30-40o C.
(8) They show maximum activity at an optimum pH of 6 – 8.
(9) The velocity of enzyme increases with increase in substrate concentration.
