Question

What are enzymes ? Write in brief the mechanism of enzyme catalysis ?

Open in App
Solution

Enzymes are protein molecules of high molecular mass and form colloidal solutions in water. They are present in plants and animals and behave as biochemical catalysts or biocatalyst i.e., catalyse the reactions occurring in human beings.

Mechanism of enzyme catalysis A number of cavities of characteristic shape with active groups (NH2,COOH,SH,OH,etc.) are present on the surface of colloidal particles of enzymes. Reactant molecules of specific shape fit into these cavities to form an activated complex. which further decomposes to yield products. Mainly two steps are involved in this entire process:

(a) Binding of an enzyme to a substrate (reactant) to form activated complex.

E+SES

(b) Decomposition of the activated complex to form the product.

ESE+P
