Question

What are Exothermic and Endothermic reactions? Give one example of each of them.

Open in App
Solution

Exothermic reactions are those reactions in which heat is released.
ReactantProducts+heat
Reactants→products+heat\displaystyle Reactants \rightarrow products + heatFor example, when carbon combines with oxygen to form carbon dioxide, heat is evolved during the reaction. So it is an exothermic reaction.

C(s)+O2(g)+CO2(g)+Heat
Endothermic reactions are those reactions in which heat is absorbed.
Reactants+heat→products\displaystyle Reactants + heat \rightarrow products Reactant+heatProducts
For example, nitrogen reacts with the oxygen to form nitric oxide, in this reaction heat is absorbed to carry out the reaction, hence this reaction is endothermic.

N2(g)+O2(g)+Heat+2NO(g)
C(s)+O2(g)   →\displaystyle C(s) + O_2(g) \: \rightarrow

N2(g)+O2(g)+Heat→2NO(g) \displaystyle N_2(g) + O_2(g) + Heat \rightarrow 2NO(g) \:
