What are fibrous and globular proteins?

Open in App
Solution

Fibrous Proteins:

  1. Fibrous proteins, also known as scleroproteins, are one of the three major types of proteins (alongside globular and membrane proteins).
  2. Elongated or fibrous polypeptide chains generate filamentous and sheet-like structures in fibrous proteins.
  3. These animal proteins are not soluble in water
  4. Examples include elastin, collagen, and keratin.

Globular proteins:

  1. One of the most common protein shapes is spherical ("globe-like") proteins, also known as globular proteins or spheroproteins.
  2. Globular proteins, unlike fibrous or membrane proteins, are generally water-soluble (forming colloids in water).
  3. These proteins are usually soluble in acids, water, alcohol, and bases.
  4. Examples include albumin of eggs and hemoglobin.
