  • Only two types of atoms, hydrogen and carbon, make up the entirety of the organic molecules known as hydrocarbons.
  • Hydrocarbons are typically odourless gases with very little colour.
  • Hydrocarbons can have very simple structures or complicated ones.
  • These are further classified into two categories saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons.
  • Alkane containing a single bond is a saturated hydrocarbon.
  • Alkene and Alkyne containing double and triple bonds respectively are unsaturated hydrocarbons.

  • Methane, Ethane:- Major constituent of Natural gas.
  • Propane and butane:- Major constituents of the LPG gas.
  • Ethene:- used in the manufacturing of the polymer polyethene.
