The atom or group of atoms present in the molecule which determines characteristics property of organic compounds is called the functional group.
Functional groups are the sites where reactions occurs in organic molecules. $- N H_{2}$ is the functional group of amines. For example, methyl amine $C H_{3} - N H_{2}$ contains $- N H_{2}$ functional group.
