Guard cells:

  1. In the epidermis of the leaf, there are small pores present that are responsible for the exchange of gases in and out of the intercellular spaces known as stomata.
  2. The structure of each stoma is bounded by a pair of specialized epidermal cells known as guard cells.
  3. The guard cells are responsible for the opening and closing of stomata which helps in the exchange of the gases.
