What are 'hormones'?

Open in App
Solution

Hormones are certain chemical messengers synthesized and secreted by specialized cells, called glands, within the body of a multicellular organism. Hormones are secreted directly into the tissue fluid, such as blood, which takes it to target tissues and organs of the body to exert their functions. Organisms produce multiple hormones, each with specific functions, thereby regulating growth and development, homeostasis, metabolism, reproduction, and other processes within the body.
