Interferons are proteins produced by animal body in response to viral infection. They are named as such because they interfere with the proliferation of viruses. They play an important role in protecting the organism from viral infection and also bacterial and parasitic pathogens. One type of interferons are known as cytokines which play a role in intercellular signalling.
