Question

What are intermolecular forces ? How are these related to the three state of matter?

Open in App
Solution

  • Intermolecular forces are the forces of attraction and repulsion between interacting atoms and molecules.
  • Because of these forces molecule is attached to the other.
  • Greater the attraction between the molecules lesser will be the space between them and higher will be the density of matter.
  • So, following is the order of strength of intermolecular forces between the various states of matter.

Solid > Liquid >Gas.
