Question

What are interstitial hydrides?

Open in App
Solution

Hydrides

  • Under certain reaction conditions, dihydrogen combines with all elements except noble gases to produce binary compounds known as hydrides.
  • Hydrides are of three types that are Ionic hydrides, covalent hydrides, and Metallic or non-stoichiometric hydrides(Interstitial hydrides )

Interstitial hydrides

  • Interstitial hydrides form hydrogen bonds with transition metals.
  • This type of hydride is also known as metallic hydrides.
  • These are formed by many f-block and d-block elements.
  • Heat and electricity are conducted by these hydrides, but not as well as their parent metals do.
  • This type of hydride can be nonstoichiometric, which means that the proportion of H atoms to metals is not fixed.

Examples of interstitial hydrides

LaH2.87, YbH2.55, NiH0.60.7, and PdH0.60.8 are examples of interstitial hydrides.
