Question

What are isotopes give one example?

Open in App
Solution

Isotopes: The different atoms of the same element having the same atomic number but different mass numbers are known as isotopes.

Example: Isotopes of Carbon are represented as C612,C613,C614

Number of neutrons(n) = mass number(A) - atomic number(Z))

Therefore No. of neutrons in C612 = 12 - 6 = 6

No. of neutrons in C613 = 13 - 6 = 7

No. of neutrons in C614 = 14 - 6 = 8

Therefore, isotopes are differed by the number of neutrons.
