Lone pairs are the pairs of valence electrons that are not shared with any other atom. They do not participate in covalent bond formation.
Example- Water molecule contains 2 lone pairs on oxygen atom.
Another example is of ammonia molecule having 1 lone pair on nitrogen atom.
