Macromolecules are large complex molecules that occur in the colloidal state in an intercellular fluid. They are formed by the polymerization of low molecular weight micromolecules. Polysaccharides, proteins, and nucleic acids are common examples of macromolecules.

Examples. The biologic macromolecules are essential to life. All living things are made up of just four macromolecules: proteins, lipids, polysaccharides, and nucleic acids. Proteins are macromolecules made up of amino acid building blocks.
