What are millets, give brief description of climatic conditions and producing state of millets grown in India

The millets are highly variable small-seeded grasses mainly grown as cereal crops. They are used as food by humans as well as animal feed. Millets are mostly grown in the semi-arid tropics of Asia and Africa (especially in India, Nigeria, and Niger).

Climatic conditions required for cultivation of millets:
1. It is rain fed crop which is grown in moist areas.
2. It requires moderate rainfall of 30-100 cms and high temperatures ranging from 20 to 32°C.
3. Bajra grows well on sandy soils and shallow black soil.
4. Ragi crop grows in dry regions and grows well on red, black, sandy, loamy and shallow black soils.

Millets producing states in India:Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Gujarat,Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, Uttrakhand etc.
