Nerves
The nervous system comprises a complex neuronal network that connects the sense organs, brain, and spinal cord. This network helps the animals respond to external stimuli by maintaining coordination and control.
Thread-like structures that emerge from the spinal cord or brain are called the nerve. It encloses a bundle of nerve fibres or axons in a tubular sheath.
Nerves are responsible for carrying information in the form of electrical impulses between different parts. They make up the majority of the peripheral nervous system.
Types of nerves (classified based on the action they perform)
Sensory nerves- carry information from the sensory organs to the brain. Eg- auditory nerve (internal ear to the brain).
Motor nerves- carry information from the brain to different muscles in the body. Eg- the oculomotor nerve (brain to the eye muscles).
Mixed nerves- carry both sensory and motor nerve fibres. Eg- all spinal nerves (Vagus nerve).
