Nerves:

  1. Nerves are the fundamental structural and functional unit of the peripheral nervous system.
  2. They comprise the fibre- like structures that send and receive the signals between the brain and the body.
  3. They contain the nerve cells or neurons that help in signal transduction and processing.
  4. The nerve cells transmit motor and sensory information between the PNS and CNS.

Functions of nerves:

  1. Nerves send electrical signals that help feel the sensations and movement of body muscles.
  2. Nerves control body functions like digestion, breathing and maintaining the heart beat.
  3. They help in all the voluntary movements of the body.
  4. They act to respond to the senses like touch, pain, taste and smell.
  5. They help in maintaining the Blood pressure.
  6. They aid in stress response as well.
