• A non-metal is an element that can form negative ions by gaining electrons.

• $\mathrm{O}+2{\mathrm{e}}^{-}\to {\mathrm{O}}^{2-}$
• At room temperature, non-metals are either solids or gases, except bromine ($\mathrm{Br}$), which is a liquid.
• Carbon($\mathrm{C}$), Hydrogen ($\mathrm{H}$), nitrogen ($\mathrm{N}$), oxygen ($\mathrm{O}$), chlorine ($\mathrm{Cl}$) etc. are examples of non-metals.
