Question

What are OTEC power plants? How do they operate?

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: OTEC power plants:

Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) power plants use ocean energy (variations in ocean water temperature) to perform various useful works.

Step 2: Working:

The working of the OTEC power plants is described below,

  1. The temperature of the water in the ocean decreases with the increase in depth. This property is used to change the phase of a low boiling point liquid such as ammonia.
  2. A high-temperature vapor is used to run the turbine, and this vapor is condensed by the low-temperature water.
  3. This cycle is continued, and the energy obtained from the rotation of the turbine is used to produce electricity.
