Plasmids are extra genomic, circular, small double-stranded DNA usually found in the cytoplasm of bacterial cells.

Role

The plasmids serve the following functions:-

* Causes expression of certain phenotypic characteristics.

* Develops antibiotic resistance in bacteria, thus protecting them from antibiotics.

* Helps in genetic recombination (conjugation) in prokaryotes.

* Helps in transfers of the information (genes/ hereditary units) from one cell to another.
