A plateau is an upland area with steep slopes and a flat surface.
Plateaus are defined based on their shape, structure, origin and height of their surface.Based on its formation, there are three types of plateaus-
Intermontane plateaus, Piedmont plateaus and Continental plateaus.
Intermontane plateaus: A plateau surrounded by mountains on all sides.
Piedmont plateaus: A plateau having a mountain on one side. They are situated at the foothills of a mountain.
Continental plateaus: A plateau surrounded by oceans or plains.
