A plateau is an upland area with steep slopes and a flat surface.​
Plateaus are defined based on their shape, structure, origin and height of their surface.​Based on its formation, there are three types of plateaus-
Intermontane plateaus, Piedmont plateaus and Continental plateaus.
  • Intermontane plateaus: A plateau surrounded by mountains on all sides.
  • Piedmont plateaus: A plateau having a mountain on one side.​ They are situated at the foothills of a mountain.​
  • ​Continental plateaus: A plateau surrounded by oceans or plains.​
