Polyatomic ions

• A group of atoms carrying a charge is known as a polyatomic ion or ions which consist of more than one type of atom.

Examples of polyatomic ions

• Nitrate ion$\left({\mathrm{NO}}_3^{-}\right)$:-In this ion, three oxygen atoms, and one nitrogen atom are present.
• Ammonium ion$\left({\mathrm{NH}}_4^{+}\right)$:-In this ion, four hydrogen atoms, and one nitrogen atom are present.
• Sulfate ion $\left({\mathrm{SO}}_4^{2–}\right)$:-In this ion, four oxygen atoms, and one sulfur atom are present.
