Proteins are large biomolecules, or macromolecules, consisting of one or more long chains of amino acid residues. Proteins are made up of hundreds or thousands of smaller units called amino acids, which are attached to one another in long chains.
Peptide bonds form through a process known as dehydration synthesis. In dehydration synthesis, a chemical bond is formed through the loss of a water molecule. When two amino acids bond, the nitrogen of one amine group will bond to the carbon of the other amino acids carboxyl group.
