Protochordates

  1. Organisms from the lower chordates are referred to as protochordates.
  2. These species make up a significant portion of the Chordata phylum while not belonging to a formal taxonomic category.
  3. The notochord, which supports an organism's body, is present in protochordates for part of their lifetimes or constantly.
  4. These species, which are frequently also called Acraniata, lack a true skull and cranium.
