What are represented by the equation 1r=1+cosθ+3sinθ

Open in App
Solution

1r=1+cosθ+3sinθ1=r+rcosθ+r3sinθ
Now we know rcosθ=x,rsinθ=y,r=x2+y2
1=x2+y2+x+3yx2+y2=1x3y
Squaring both sides
x2+y2=1+x2+3y22x+23xy23y2y2+23xy2x23y+1=0
Comparing the equation with general equation of second degree
a=0,b=2,h=3,g=1,f=3,c=1Δ=abc+2fghaf2bg2ch2Δ=(0×2×1)+(2×3×1×3)(0×3)(2×1)(1×3)Δ=0+623Δ=1Δ>0
So the equation represents a hyperbola.
