Molluscs are the animals with the soft body and covered with the hard calcareous shell as the exoskeleton. They are mostly aquatic. This shell is secreted by a thin sheet of tissue called as a mantle, which encloses the internal organs. Within the mantle cavity hang the gills which are used to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide in respiration. In certain bivalves, gills are used for respiration as well as for filter feeding.
