  • The hydrocarbons that contain only C-C single bonds are known as saturated hydrocarbons. All alkanes are saturated hydrocarbons.

Example: methane and ethane.

  • The hydrocarbons that contain C-C double bonds and triple bonds are known as unsaturated hydrocarbons. All alkenes and alkynes are unsaturated hydrocarbons.

Example: ethene and ethyne.
