Secondary metabolites are compounds that are derived from primary metabolites. They are produced in limited quantity in later stage of plant's life. Following are few examples of secondary metabolites and their uses:
(i) Terpenoid: It gives color and flavour.
(ii) Quinoline derivatives: Used as antimalarial drug.
(iii) Vinca alkaloid: Used as anticancer drug.
(iv) Serpentine: Used to treat high blood pressure.
(v) Camptothecin: Used as anticancer and antiviral drug.
(vi) Latex: Natural rubber is obtained from it. It is used to make gloves, catheters, balloons, glues.
