Solution

Segmented genomes in RNA

  1. Single (unsegmented) or multiple (segmented) genomic molecules can be found in RNA viruses.
  2. The majority of RNA genomes have segments.
  3. That is to say, it is separated into separate segments, each of which is thought to code for a single protein.
  4. When multiple viral strains coexist in the same cell, a segmented genome enables genetic re-assortment, providing a source of variety for the virus.
  5. During replication and morphogenesis, the RNA molecules of various virus strains are jumbled or reshuffled in doubly infected cells.
  6. Even though certain virus genomes may consist of 10–12 segments, in most cases, all of the segments are likely contained within the same capsid.
  7. Not every fragment has the same virion's position to effectively reproduce.
  8. The genome of the brome mosaic virus consists of four pieces, which are split across three virus particles.
  9. All three of these biggest segments are required for infectivity.
