What are shells?

Solution

Shells:

  1. The electrons are present outside the nucleus, revolving around it.
  2. They form a cloud of negative charge around the nucleus in definite orbits called 'shells'. These shells are also called energy levels.
  3. The shell closest to the nucleus is K-shell, the first shell.
  4. The next shell is the L-shell, the second shell similarly, the M shell, N shell, etc.
  5. Each shell has a limited capacity to hold electrons, and each electron tries to occupy a shell with minimum energy.
