Impaired gas exchange:

  1. Impaired gas exchange is defined as the excess or deficiency of oxygen in alveolar membranes.
  2. Carbon dioxide is also not eliminated properly in this condition.
  3. It occurs due to the collection of fluid in the interstitial space or alveoli or changes in the alveolar-capillary membrane.

Signs of impaired gas exchange:

  1. Abnormal breathing
  2. Coughing
  3. Nasal flaring
  4. Confusion
  5. Cyanosis (only in newborns)
  6. Hypoxemia (low levels of oxygen in the blood)
