  1. Basidiomycetes belong to the kingdom of fungi.
  2. They grow on logs, in soil, on tree trunks, and exist as parasites on some plants.
  3. They are also known as club fungi due to their club-shaped basidia which bear spores.
  4. They have branched and septate mycelium.
  5. Vegetative reproduction is through fragmentation in basidiomycetes.
  6. Plasmogamy takes place when the two vegetative or somatic cells of different genotypes fuse.
  7. It results in a dikaryotic structure which gives rise to basidium.
  8. These basidia undergo karyogamy and meiosis to produce 4 basidiospores.
  9. Some commonly known basidiomycetes are mushrooms, bracket fungi, and puffballs.
