What is an example of haploid-diploid insects?

Open in App
Solution

Haplodiploidy:

  1. Many insects show haplodiploidy, i.e. haplodiploid type of sex determination.
  2. Examples are ants, bees, and wasps.
  3. Sex is determined by the number of sets of chromosomes.
  4. Females are diploid and are developed from fertilized eggs. They contain two sets of chromosomes.
  5. Males are haploid and are developed from an unfertilized egg. The males possess only one set of chromosomes.
  6. A male drone neither has a father nor can have a son.
  7. It is important to note that this type of sex determination is different from the ‘XO’ type of sex determination in some insects such as grasshoppers.
  8. Here, the number of autosomes is the same in both males and females.
  9. The only difference is the sex chromosome, the female contains a pair of sex chromosomes, whereas the male contains only one sex chromosome.
