What are some important uses of remote sensing technology?

Open in App
Solution

Instructions:
  • Define Remote sensing technology.
  • Explain how it works.
  • List the uses.
Solution:

The method of collecting information about an object, place or phenomenon without actual physical contact is called remote sensing.

Devices used for data collection in remote sensing are called sensors. Cameras and scanners are sensors.
The sensors record the electromagnetic radiations reflected by objects.
The carrier on which sensors are fixed is called a platform. Sensors can be installed on balloons, air crafts and satellites.

Uses of remote sensing technology:
  1. For the assessment of weather and its observations.
  2. For ocean explorations.
  3. To understand the land use of an area.
  4. For the monitoring of flood and drought.
  5. For identifying forest fires in deep forests and to adopt controlling measures.
  6. To collect data regarding the extent of crops and spread of pest attack.
  7. For oil explorations.
  8. To locate ground water potential places.
